Reading Music Theory from a Distance: A Corpus Study of the Thesaurus Musicarum Italicarum


The history of music theory from Antiquity to the present day has produced a large number of central textual sources covering an extensive range of music-related topics such as mathematics, acoustics, philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, composition, and performance. This vast resource is fundamental for large parts of historical musicological inquiry, and music scholars have ever since scrutinized and critically contextualized these texts.

The comprehensive study of these sources, however, faces a number of challenges. Apart from uncertainties related to fragmented transmission, authenticity and authorship attribution as well as precise dating, a more practical concern for scholars is the sheer amount of sources that surpass any individual scholar’s capacities. To overcome this obstacle, a number of initiatives have created large digitized collections of music-theoretical and musicological texts, providing online access for the benefit of the entire musicological community.

These online corpora not only provide access to the textual sources, they also lend themselves to quantitative analyses which do not focus on individual texts or passages, but rather take a more global stance and study texts on a large scale. This process of “distant reading” complements philological and critical examination, and allows to “measure” the texts quantitatively. This, in turn, may generate a host of novel research questions, e.g. about textual similarities, author affinities, recurrent themes and topics, or historically changing vocabularies, and to some degree questions the fundamental distinction between empirical and historical approaches in music scholarship.

In the present study, we adapt and apply numerical methods from computational literary studies and natural language processing, such as text classification and topic modeling, to the Thesaurus Musicarum Italicarum, a corpus of more than thirty Renaissance and Baroque Italian music theory treatises. We discuss the extent to which distant and close reading are mutually beneficial by critically evaluating the results of our analyses.

He obtained is PhD in Digital Humanities from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Working with large symbolic datasets of musical scores and harmonic annotations, he is primarily interested in Computational Music Analysis, Music Theory, Music Cognition, and their mutual relationship.
